The Vine - 10th Feb 2006 - Zoo in Flames, Rotary Ten and the Last
So I walk into the Vine and immediately forget how small this venue is, especially when the bar is at least two-deep. I'm confronted instantly with garage rock from a band called The Last. They're okay, for what they do. Emitting a typical northern attitude (they're from Darlo) playing songs fashioned from the Oasis/Stone Roses mould, this band did well to stir a so far lacklustre audience. Next were a band from Sheffield called Rotary Ten, they certainly made people listen. They were very of today's music scene, spiky guitars that bounced around the stage, this together with a youthful look of art-school troubadours stood out to an crowd in semi-awe. Yet, judging by the music, these guys do take what they do very seriously and much effort has gone into honing their sound, instead of simply seeking satisfaction from their peers in the way they look . Certainly, a band to be checked out in the near future. Zoo in Flames finish off the night attracting a large(ish) crowd, to whom they entertained fully - despite the hamperings of a dodgy sound mix. Some songs muddy, as though playing underwater, yet battled the elements to come up trumps. ZiF opened with crowd favourite 'Forward People', what with its powerful drums, uplifting choral synth and intricate guitars - this is defining the promise that this band have. Having re-worked the 90's guitar sound, instilling a modern day ethos of adapting song writing techniques - with particular thanks to samplers and programming software. This band have a lighter side, shown in ballad-esque humalongs 'Lucky Strike' and 'Horizons', this ability to turn a corner is ever present when listening to a ZiF set. 'Vapour Street' is ploddy yet agonisingly euphoric, while the punky Primal Scream influenced \'Velocity Kid\' is fast and sounds almost dangerous. A set worthy of more recognition, ZiF can make or break their own future. Vibrations Magazine
